Why Concrete Cracks

Cracks in concrete can occur from shrinkage, chemical leaks, aggregate expansion, and normal wear and tear. Shrinkage is a main cause of cracking. As concrete hardens and dries it shrinks. This is due to the evaporation of excess mixing water. The wetter or soupier the original concrete mix, the greater the shrinkage will be. The resulting unsealed cracks allow water in, which can cause major damage to concrete pavement. As water seeps through the crack openings into the concrete it can even reach the base layer under the concrete, a far worse situation. Also, when our Michigan winter arrives, frost heaves can occur and may require expensive repairs.

The Concrete Repair Process

Depending on the degree of harm, some cracks can be filled with epoxy. As mentioned, if the damage is deep, the concrete should be removed and re-surfaced. The concrete repair is then done by cutting and removing the damaged area, strengthening the transitions between the old and new concrete, then installing the new concrete.
